Mid-Town Plaza: Clock of Nations!

My dearest friend, Brian, sent me a birthday treasure! The fact that he found this at all is a marvel.

I must explain: For those of you who remember the Mid-Town Plaza in Rochester, NY, you might have super fond memories of the magical clock tower that used to sit center stage there. If so, you will appreciate the present I received.

AH! Where did he find an old paper bag from that bygone era? Well, he does dumpster dive (well, curb dive, really.) But STILL!

For those of you who do NOT know, there once was a beautiful department store in downtown Rochester that had an amazing clock tower in the center that, at the strike of the hour, would open and puppets representing various countries of the world would dance and twirl. Childhood glee! Then, at noon, all twelve would open at once and every country would shine in all of it's colorful splendor!

Take a look:

Crazy, right?! So very 1960's, right? I loved it and it had a profound impact on me....uh, dolls? Also, I find myself drawn to certain Russian architecture that has similar color chaos, that somehow works.

So, with the construction of malls outside the city and the demise of downtown, so went Sibley's and the magical clocktower.

Or did it?

Imagine my utter, utter surprise and bewildered joy when I recently went to the Rochester airport to catch a flight and lo! There it was in all it's glory!

And by some glorious quirk of fate, I was there when the clock struck noon....

The hopeful news is that some wonderful people are restoring it and potenially having it installed at the Children's Hospital. That would be wise.
P.S. Thank you to Anonymous for correcting me about exactly where this clock was located. In looking it up, I also discovered it's name. All of my memories of this mall and clock are beautifully blurred as I was very young at the time.

Kojito's Birthday present

Kojito gave me the gift of Beaster-Eggs!
Breaking open the Beasters was difficult, until I recorded each one digitally.
Then I had no problem eating them up, well, except for leaving some of them in the heat.
Those have journeyed to the compost and are having conversations about deconstructionism.

Birthday Bash!

The day was hot, the trees full of green leaves, a breeze was gently blowing, and Jim put up the tent.  Inside the house, Jen was cooking up healthy and delicious yummies to eat. Under the tent was a table filled with crafting materials! Ah, what potential! We all waited for the friends to arrive.

And they did!

Many wonderful things were made. I have to say, the pom-poms and sparkly pipe cleaners seemed to be the most inspiring, and soooo, yes, Beasts were created:

Some of them flew!

Then suddenly, some of the expatriates from the Emerald Isle showed up en masse! My goodness, what fun those Beasts and Beings are!

The Craft table was filled with all manner of magical stuffs, as Burlie did discover.

Paradoxy went WILD with all the potential for personal decoration! Particularly intrigued with the BRIGHT! and the DAZZLING! she created some new pieces for herself in a kind of bawdy 1920's style.

Whimsy discovered a feathered headband that Doxy had put aside. All's fair in Love and a Craft party!

Yolanta made a new friend. They were remarkably alike for being different types of Beings.

It was wonderful to see all of the creations gathering around, newbies being born and having fun. And for me, I was beyond happy, surrounded by wonderfully kind, intelligent, funny and caring friends. Thank you to all for making this day one for the record books - a true blessing.

The Birthday loot.

Mischief and a cat.

Dear Diary,

As you know, I am constantly on the look out for a potentially mischievous adventure and those who share this particular interest. Diary, I am very happy to write that I have met someone new. Someone who is a kindred spirit and likes me for who I am.

This is Louise. Isn't she great?

She was interested the first moment she saw me.

I wanted to get to know her better to see if she was as mischievous as I was. I've known a lot of cats in my time, and they are as different as all the stars in the sky. Would Louise be my Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds?

Ohhh...be still my heart! Do I see mischief in her lovely eyes?

Oop! Oh yeah! I am in LOVE!

Two peas in a pod. Sigh....

Mischief's day with Rich Corozine

Dear Diary,

I am not going to give up! Today, I will instigate some mischief, dang it! Ah, ha! I have heard of an artist (always a good source of unpredicatble and rambunctious behavior!) who lives nearby. I thought I'd pay him a visit.

His name is Rich Corozine, here he is in his studio.

I caught him while he was working, but that didn't stop him from telling me tall tales.

In a very short amount of time, I felt very confident that I could and would  influence him towards mischief! What, oh, what shall we do? Hmmmmmm....

Whisper, whisper, oh...this one will be good! OO-Hooo!

YES! YES! Mischief! Lying down in the middle of the road! Ha-ha! What chaos would ensue?...Traffic stopped, people gawking, squirrels would have to leap over him! Joy!

And as I waited for the crowd to gather...he continued to extol his theories about art, symbiosis and the meaning of chance encounters.

Ah, but Diary, my plans were foiled. Apparently there isn't much traffic or population on Lookout Ave. No one noticed us - not even a squirrel. Drat!

Hmmmm. What else?

How about jumping off a bridge??

This took some convincing....but.....

HA! It looks like we're in trouble!

Goin' Over!!!!

What??! Sing! what are you doing here?

Sing! said, "What are you thinking?! This is a really bad idea!"

"Shhhhh!" I said. "You'll ruin everything!"

Rich looked at me and said, "Hey man, you know....this IS kinda a crazy idea. I need my winter coat. It's freezing out here."

Argh...foiled again!

Mischief's day with a dog.

Dear Diary,

Oh what mischief the weather produced today! It was cloudy...then sunny....then it would snow... and then the wind blew and blew and blew!

A day like today is too inspiring for me to NOT do what I do best...seek out and instigate mischief!
My day started with meeting a new potential compatriot in  bad behavior!

This is Mo. He is a big dog. Oh the mind reels thinking of the trouble we could get into! Hee-Hee!

I introduced myself, and as it turned out, Mo was a bit shy. You might think that this was an indication of a calm, reasonable personality, but from my experience, the shy ones are often the most adventurous and crazy....once you get them warmed up! HA! So excited!

Things were looking up! My influence was taking hold....What was going to happen next???

Whoa! Yeah, baby! Unexpected and dangerous! Woo-hoo!

What? That's IT?!? .....Hrumph. Good dog.

Well Diary, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again!
